Different Types of Mutism
Mutism Caused By Physiological Impairment
This type of disorder is usually caused by a physical impairment is caused by a myriad of reasons. Mutism of this verity can be caused by damage to the motor speech area and Cranial Nerves and the speech motor system due to brain injury (Dysatharia/Anarthria, which is the complete loss of vocal function;) This type of disorder is usually attributed to stroke, parkinsons disease, head or neck injuries, surgical accident, or cerebral palsy.

Akinetic Mutism
Related to mutism caused by brain injury, many of people who suffer from this type of mutism are completely unable to move (Akinesia) and are unable to produce language because of the disorder. This type of Mutism is caused by bilateral damage to the frontal lobe area of the brain which is responsible for arousal and motivation as it hold the dopamine-reward system in the cerebral cortex . There is a variation of Akinetic Mutism, Mesencephalic Akinetic Mutism, that is caused by damage to the midbrain. The midbrain helps regulate function hearing, motor control, arousal and among other processes. This type of disorder is more attributed to the will to do these functions, than rather ability, although this type of mutism usually occours after a stroke.

Mutism due to Autism
The verdict is still out on why many of those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have difficulty or have the complete inability to produce speech. Some say that this is due to the delay of developing social skills and expressive language development in an autistic child's formative years. Other have that many autistic children have complete absence of expressive labels. Yet others explain that the mutism is attributed to those of one who suffers from Selective Mutism, as they are overwhelmed by sensory information in the amygdala and "shut out," thus missing social interactions that develop speech. Autism effects 1 out of every 68 childrem born and tends to have a predisposition in developing in more males than females, but both are affected at different rates of severity not determined by gender.

Dyslalialic Mutism and Mutism Caused by Deafness
Dyslalilic Mutism is affected by different parts of the voice motor, including damage caused to the lyrnyx, which is caused by throat cancer. damage done to the vocal chords (Chorditis;) growths/cysts in the Vocal Chord Nodules, weakness in the vocal chord folds; Reinke's Edema, the swelling of the vocal folds due to fluid collection and other types of physiological impairments to the vocal chords, lungs, tongue and mouth. Muteness can also cause one who is deaf to also not be able to produce speech as for one to learn how to produce speech, the ability to hear is an essential component. Communication within the deaf/mute type is usually facilitated by teaching them sign language at an early age. Most people who have Dysalialic and deaf/mute mutism have no physiological damage that causes them to be unable to produce speech.

Selective Mutism
Selective Mutism is an anxiety disorder that occurs in people who are perfectly able to speak. This type of anxiety disorder is typified an inability to talk in certain social situations, not attributed to a speech disorder, is pervasive to occupational/social/educational advancement and the disturbance is longer than at least one month. This type of Mutism is theorized to be caused by overexcitement to the Amygdala which is responsible for the flight-or-fight response. Some children also have problem processing sensory information which causes an input overexcitement and they simply "shut down" or have auditory processing difficulties. Selective Mutism tends to be most apparent when child is at speaking age, being the most obvious around the time they start school and is uaully pared with social anxiety disorder in diagnosing.
